BET Orders 'Street Dreams' Pilot Based on Nas' Life

  /  02.01.2017

Nas’ life story may be coming to BET. Fresh off the success of its New Edition miniseries, the network has ordered a pilot for “Street Dreams,” a series based on the hip-hop icon’s life, according to Deadline.

Set in New York in the early ’90s, the hour-long series was named after Nas’ 1996 single off It Was Written, and chronicles the ascent of Nas, a young man from the Queensbridge projects who goes on to become a superstar rapper.

Two years ago, the series was picked up by the now defunct Xbox Entertainment Studios as a half-hour comedy. It’s unclear whether the format will change or stay the same.

“Rush” creator Jonathan Levine, who also grew up in New York in the ’90s, is set to write the script and direct the pilot. He will join Nas as an executive producer. Nas’ manager Anthony Saleh and filmmakers Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell are also slated to executive produce the show.

Nas is no stranger to film and television. Last year, he was an executive producer for “The Get Down” on Netflix and The Land, which starred Erykah Badu and Machine Gun Kelly.

Nas has a big year ahead of him. Aside from this series, he’s planning to release the follow-up to 2012’s Life Is Good. Last year, he teased fans with DJ Khaled’s Major Key single “Nas Album Done.”
