Ed Sheeran Makes Hot 100 History

  /  01.17.2017

Ed Sheeran makes history.

On Tuesday (Jan. 17), the British crooner became the first artist ever to debut two singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously with “Shape of You” at No. 1 and “Castle on the Hill” at No. 6.

“It feels amazing to debut at No. 1 in the U.S. especially after being away for so long,” said Sheeran. “Topping the Hot 100 for the first time AND to have ‘Castle on the Hill’ also debut in the top 10…I’m speechless.

“I really wanted to come back with those two songs to show the different sides of my music and what people can expect on ÷,” he added. “The response to both songs has been absolutely incredible. I can’t wait to share the rest of the album.”

With “Shape,” Sheeran also celebrates his first No. 1 ever on the Billboard Hot 100. Prior to this, “Thinking Out Loud” was his biggest hit on the chart, peaking at No. 2 for a record-setting eight straight weeks.

Sheeran also made history in his native U.K., where “Shape” and “Castle” debuted at No. 1 and No. 2, making him the first artist to nab the top two slots with new singles there. He also has the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in New Zealand, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Ireland.

The record-setting continues on Spotify where he earned the biggest one-day streaming record and the biggest first-week global streams record. Beating out Adele’s “Hello” and Drake’s “One Dance,” “Shape of You” received 7,940,950 streams in a day and 52 million global streams in a week.

The fact that “Shape” has no features is also a big deal. It’s the first unaccompanied No. 1 on the chart since Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” topped the Hot 100 back in May of 2016.

Elsewhere on the chart, Migos’ “Bad and Boujee” falls to No. 2 and Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” dips to No. 3. The Weeknd’s “Starboy” holds steady at No. 4, Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” slips 5-6, Maroon 5’s Kendrick Lamar-assisted “Don’t Wanna Know” drops to No. 8, and Ariana Grande’s Nicki Minaj collab “Side to Side” dives to No. 9. Finally, MGK and Camila Cabello’s “Bad Things” rounds out the top 10.
