Dreamville’s Ari Lennox serves up fresh Pho with her new EP, out today.
The 25-year-old songstress describes the 7-track effort as “modern, relaxed,” and “turned up soul.” “It’s just chill with trappy vibes reminiscent of the beautiful music from the ’70s,” she explained.
PHO’s lead single “Backseat” — which also appeared on Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers II — is the project’s first example of that musical blend she describes. Teaming with labelmate Cozz for some arcade fun, “Backseat” allows Lennox to be daring.
“While the music is soulful,” says Lennox, “I’m also talking about something suggestive and unusual for a female.”
That seems to be part of the Dreamville songstress’ M.O. “Sometimes women are put in this box where we’re only supposed to talk about certain things,” she adds. “I want to be braver and riskier. I think people want to hear that kind of honesty and frankness.”
