Vic Mensa is here to stay. The Southside Chicago MC declares his arrival on his late-night freestyle “Heir to the Throne.” Over the instrumental to Biggie’s classic “Who Shot Ya?,” he delivers some defiant bars, which he describes as “Assata Shakur mixed in with Fred Hampton.”

The self-described “young Jimmy Page” warns the competition (“This the beginning of a new dynasty, I hope you ni**as come prepared / You should be very scared”), gets a co-sign from A$AP Rocky (“He said I’m iller than any of these rap ni**as who gon’ try to advise me”), and jokes about signing a deal with the Illuminati (“That’s how I got the ‘Ye feature and super poppin'”).

But don’t get it twisted. Just because Kanye West is featured on his single “U Mad,” he’s not responsible for his success. “Don’t chalk my success up to Kanye influence / Ni**a, I made ‘U Mad’ before I met dude ass.”

Vic’s debut album Traffic is due this fall on Roc Nation/Def Jam. Earlier this month, he dropped his Skrillex collaboration “No Chill.”
