With less than a week until the release of her debut Souled Out, Jhené Aiko stopped by Angie Martinez’ show on Power 105.1 on Wednesday. The “To Love & Die” songstress chatted about being a mother to her five-year-old daughter Namiko, the correct pronunciation of her name, and being compared to Sade.
While her sister Mila J is also releasing her EP M.I.LA this month, don’t expect a collaboration anytime soon. The sisters have decided to keep business and family separate.
“It’s hard to even work with friends,” said Jhené. “It can get weird at times, but at the end of the day, we’re sisters.”
Read highlights and watch the full interview below.
On being compared to Sade: “When people make those comparisons to Sade, I see that. I would never say it myself because people try to kill me if I compare myself to anyone that is that great.”
On her album: “I would say it’s mellow, nice message, just real chill, ride off into the sunset type of music.”
On rumors she dated Drake and Childish Gambino: “I’m a young lady so if I work with you, that means we went out or whatever or that we love each other? I’m friends with both of them.”
On what she listens to: “I put on Tupac Pandora or Biggie Pandora. Kid Cudi, John Mayer. I listen to Drake, I listen to Kendrick, I still like Frank Ocean’s album.”
On the minimal features on her album: “The EP had a lot of features and I just want it to be my album, so people could really see what I do.”
On her sister Mila J: “We don’t work together. It’s weird, but it’s not. I feel like the style of music that I’m doing, where I wanna go, maybe doesn’t meet up with the style that she’s doing or where she is now.”
