Angel Haze’s debut Dirty Gold was not scheduled to drop until March, but the 22-year-old rapper is taking things into her own hands. She decided to leak the project three months in advance because she didn’t want to wait for her label.
She fired off a series of angry tweets aimed at Island/Republic Records.
According to Angel, the label told her that the album would be released this year if she finished it in time. She kept her end of the deal, but they still gave her a March 4, 2014 release date.
“It’s so annoying that my label could tell me that if I fucking finished my album before the summer it would be out this year,” she said. “I have gone to bat for this music. I have gone to bat for myself. I have literally sat fucking sleepless and starved crying over this shit.”
She reached her breaking point. “So sorry to Island/Republic Records, but fuck you,” said Angel. “I got here doing this for my fans and if you guys don’t feel the same, it won’t stop me. Idc what happens after this. They will get the music they were promised. And you guys JUST MAY LEARN TO KEEP YOUR FUCKING WORD.”
She added, “Since they don’t want to put it out this year, I will. Here’s the album. HERE IS DIRTY GOLD. I hope you all enjoy it.”
The full album was posted to SoundCloud, but was quickly removed, presumably by her label.
Earlier this week, she released one of the 12 tracks, “A Tribe Called Red,” and shared the tracklisting.
UPDATE: Angel’s plan seems to have worked. Her label has moved the release date of Dirty Gold up to December 30 in the U.S. and U.K.
“My labels have agreed to release Dirty Gold December 30th. Uk & US. (Rest of the world, we are coming for you as well). Thank you all. Night,” she tweeted.
