New Music Premiere: Dawn Richard - 'Change'

Change

Dawn Richard calls for “Change” with the first offering from her EP Armor On, the prequel to the GoldenHeart trilogy, due in late March. The three-minute interlude serves as an introduction to the sound of Heart music.

“The sound is aggressive, militant, but soulful,” the former Dirty Money member tells staging-rapup.kinsta.cloud. “I wanted to add a New Orleans base in times of the second line, in celebration of our culture. Druski, the key producer of the EP, married the influences to tell the story of GoldenHeart.”

Dawn sings about a love that hasn’t changed despite personal mishaps. “I used this metaphor to inspire the [Hearts] and tell them that we are imperfect but still worth loving,” she explains. “I didn’t want to do a corny idea of love. I wanted it to have a strength to it and not be cliché. I want to push the Hearts to hear R&B in a different way.”
